Radiative Transfer in Spiral Galaxies

چکیده

The internal dust extinction in spiral galaxies can affect our understanding of their structure and morphology, as well as our perception of the distant universe in the background. The intrinsic properties of the stellar and dust components can be studied by comparing the observed appearance of a dusty spiral in the optical with a radiative transfer model. The absorbed starlight is re-radiated by dust in the FIR/sub-mm. Thus, observations at long wavelengths allow to put further constraints on the properties of the dust distribution. I present our Monte Carlo simulations for dust extinction and emission in galactic disks, discuss the basic ingredients and limitations and compare them with other solutions for the radiative transfer available in the literature. I review the current picture of dusty disks that emerges from radiative transfer studies.

Modelling the Interstellar Medium of Low Surface Brightness Galaxies: Constraining Internal Extinction, Disk Color Gradients, and Intrinsic Rotation Curve Shapes

We use a combination of three-dimensional Monte Carlo radiative transfer techniques and multiwavelength (BRHK, Hα) imaging data to investigate the nature of the interstellar medium (ISM) in the edge-on, low surface brightness (LSB) galaxy UGC 7321. Using realistic models that incorporate multiple scattering effects and clumping of the stars and the interstellar material, we explore the distribu...

Dust Attenuation in Hydrodynamic Simulations of Spiral Galaxies

We study the effects of dust in hydrodynamic simulations of spiral galaxies when different radial metallicity gradients are assumed. SUNRISE, a Monte-Carlo radiative-transfer code, is used to make detailed calculations of the internal extinction of disk galaxies caused by their dust content. SUNRISE is used on eight different Smooth Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) simulations of isolated spiral ga...

Monte Carlo Predictions of Far-Infrared Emission from Spiral Galaxies

We present simulations of Far Infrared (FIR) emission by dust in spiral galaxies, based on the Monte Carlo radiative transfer code of Bianchi, Ferrara & Giovanardi (1996). The radiative transfer is carried out at several wavelength in the Ultraviolet (UV), optical and Near Infrared (NIR), to cover the range of the stellar Spectral Energy Distribution (SED). Together with the images of the galac...

Ultraviolet Dust Grain Properties in Starburst Galaxies: Evidence from Radiative Transfer Modeling and Local Group Extinction Curves

This paper summarizes the evidence of the ultraviolet properties of dust grains found in starburst galaxies. Observations of starburst galaxies clearly show that the 2175 Å feature is weak or absent. This can be the result of radiative transfer effects (mixing the dust and stars) or due to dust grains which do not have this feature. Spherical DIRTY radiative transfer models imply that it is not...
